Next Gen: Artists to watch in 2019

The music biz is forever changing and 2019 will be no different. Comebacks, breakthroughs, revivals, reboots and freshness – all will be present this coming year. Here’s our list of our artists set to break out in 2019:

Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish’s debut album is likely to appear this year, and while she’s only 17, she is no unknown. Since her initial SoundCloud postings in 2015, her online releases have drawn hundreds of millions of Spotify streams and have made her a tour headliner. The songs she writes with her brother and producer, Finneas O’Connell, are usually hushed ballads that glance back at Lana Del Rey and Lorde. Her voice is whispery and sweetly tearful with a steely undercurrent, and it stakes out a particular persona: passionate and vulnerable but also vindictive and treacherous. Onstage, she gets thousands of voices singing along.

Lil Tjay

Lil Tjay is an exuberant, sweet-voiced singer-rapper from the Bronx with an easy instinct for melody. What helps him stand out from the current overstuffed class of artists with similar aesthetic approaches is his comfort moving between both light and dark subject matter, as on the hit “Brothers” and “Long Time.”

Ella Mai

Ella Mai is a 24-year-old singer from London. Ella’s quite unique for a British artist in that she became a huge star in America before making waves here in the UK – her song ‘Boo’d Up’ got to Number 5 in the US charts. She released her self-titled debut album back in October, has been nominated for two Grammy Awards and for British Breakthrough Act at the 2019 BRIT Awards.

Ava Max

The 24-year-old singer from Wisconsin in the US is best known for ‘Sweet but Psycho’ – her super catchy breakout single that went to Number 1 on The Official Big Top 40 for the first time in December. Ava’s worked with David Guetta and Jason Derulo in the past and told Will Manning on the show that she’s got even more hits lined up for 2019.

King Princess

The 20-year-old singer from Brooklyn – whose real name is Mikaela Straus – shot to fame last year after One Direction star Harry Styles tweeted a lyric from her debut single ‘1950’ to his 33 million followers. She’s now signed to Mark Ronson’s label Zelig Records and is expected to release her debut studio album at some point in 2019.

Juice WRLD

Jarad Higgins, known professionally as Juice WRLD, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter from Calumet Park, Illinois. He is primarily known for his breakout hits, “All Girls Are the Same” and “Lucid Dreams”. His music has been described as “emo-leaning and genre-bending”.

Momoland is a South Korean girl group formed by MLD Entertainment through the 2016 reality show, Finding Momoland. The show winners became the seven members, Hyebin, Yeonwoo, Jane, Nayun, JooE, Ahin, and Nancy.

Lil Skies

Lil Skies (born August 4, 1998) is a rapper from Pennsylvania who is best known for singles “Signs of Jealousy” and “Change Ya Life.” In 2017, he signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records. He has earned multiple cosigns from the CUFBOYS.
